Let's look at it from this angle...

Hi Guys,

Just quick blog post today.  It's so gorgeous outside that I cannot allow myself to sit at my computer and edit all afternoon.  Hopefully you can get out and do the same!

The photography tip for today is: Angle.

Think outside the box when shooting and try to get out of your comfort zone.  The same subject shot at several different angles produces several different outcomes. I know, it sounds like common sense, but when you see the final results it is truly eye opening.  So, put on your yoga pants, strap that gear around your neck and start squatting, bending, stretching and get the images you really love...

and the exercise you dread!

Take a peak at the images below of a rose bush in my yard.  Editing settings are the same throughout, no additional adjustments were made to any single image.  Look how amazingly different the photos feel...

Back to the grind...

Everybody knows the feeling well...

You shriek with anticipation as you zip up your suitcase for a much needed vacation!  Once you get there you unwind and unplug (well you try to, at least...) and enjoy yourself, spend time with your awesome family,  but eventually before you know it,  you're on your flight back home.  It's "back to the grind" as I tell my kids, which is welcomed with the expected eye-rolls and moans...

But, it's true!  In life you have to work hard to be able to play hard. So, I'm back in my office doing just that, but secretly this job doesn't feel like work at all!  However, my kids don't need to know that..this is a teaching moment!

Today I am getting ready print and album orders that clients have placed within the last few weeks.  I sure hope they bring post-vacation smiles to their faces...

The "F word"...

Photographers will drop the F word like a trucker...

NO, I'm not talking about the infamous F word you're thinking of...get your head out of the gutter!  I'm talking about F stops.  F stops, also known as focal ratios are critical to getting  a perfect photograph, or maybe perfect in the eye of the photographer.  In simple terms, an F stop contributes to the amount of light and depth of field in the image.  Altering an F stop can drastically alter a photograph without touching one other setting on the camera...

Check out the images below that were captured from the same point of view with only their F stops changed... Can you spot the differences?

So, try it out.  Go ahead and drop your F stops like a trucker...

STA Fashion Show 2016

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
CRUISIN AROUND THE WORLD FASHION SHOW

STA Gymnasium
Dover, New Hampshire
April 10, 2016

Yesterday I was honored to photograph the St. Thomas Aquinas Cruisin' Around the World Fashion Show!  This annual fundraiser is held to benefit the STA Financial Aid/Scholarship program.  Complete with a raffle, games, a live auction and more, proceeds from the event help many students afford a St. Thomas Aquinas High School education.

With an international flair, alumni, parents, faculty, and friends enjoyed a great day of fellowship, food, fashion and fun!  To say the event was wonderful would feel like an injustice. Each table was stunningly decorated to perfection, the smell of an eclectic foods filled the air, and good will and generosity was felt by all in attendance.

Thank you again to St. Thomas Aquinas for allowing me to capture a truly special afternoon!

Keep smiling STA and doing good, by helping fund a quality education that is deserved by all!

LAUREN
Professional Headshots
The Farm at Eastman's Corner
Kensington, New Hampshire
April 9, 2016

Smart, funny and easy going would be a perfect way for me to describe Lauren.  She reached out to me looking to capture professional headshots.  Like many of us ladies, we never make the time to have pictures taken of ourselves.  Instead, we keep our social media and corporate profile pictures looking like we did ten years ago.  Please don't do that ladies!  Update those headshots because I assure you, today you are more beautiful, confident and accomplished woman!  Let that be how the world sees you!

Keep smiling Lauren and being the beautiful you, inside and out!

Tracking trails...

ELI & WILSON
Hunting Shoot
Hampton Falls, New Hampshire
April 6, 2016

Today I was fortunate to do something I have never done!  I went on a hunting tour in a section of woods in Hampton Falls with a young man who I know and am very fond of, and his trusted lab, Wilson.  I've been friends with Eli and his family for about five years.  His father, a true outdoorsman has passed on his passion of the sport to his son.  We walked on the trails for about an hour and he explained several tracks left in the remaining snow of different animals that had walked there before us.
It was really an eye-opening experience into a world I knew nothing about.  There was a calming just walking along as the leaves crunched beneath our boots and I could see that Eli was in his element.  His happy place.
It was quite interesting when I thought about it later at home as I was editing images...we both walked along with our passions always racing in the back of our minds, even as we chatted.  Eli closely following the land for tracks and I kept monitoring the sky for light.  We both did what we loved and hey, we were even both "shooting."

Keep smiling Eli and tracking those trails!

Where's Mom...

OK, it is not just because I am a photographer that I am missing from most family photos. I was a mom well before I took on that professional title.  But let's face it, I'm sure many moms can relate to this situation.  We are a wearer of many hats and family photographer is one of them!  We want to make sure we capture the monumental firsts, celebrations, events and even the not so paramount moments.  We want to document our children and family's story.  The problem? We are nowhere to be found in our story! Our children are going to look thru these albums or digitals (yes, I'm cringing) and ask, "Where is mom?"  Well guys we were behind the lens as everyone was yelling "no more pictures..not ONE more...I don't want to smile again..."  Or simply because we were busy making sure everyone else looked picture perfect, we felt we were not camera ready. We thought our hair was a mess, our eyes looked tired because we had no make-up on or we had somehow let those 10 pounds creep on.  Don't beat yourselves up ladies!  That wine, cheese and chocolate got you thru to the end of those long days...it was worth it!  I have come to accept it and wear the badge with honor.

But, you do need to be in the story.  Most of you ladies are probably the glue that holds your family together.  You are the one who makes sure everything happens on that over-scheduled calendar. You are the one wiping runny noses, getting laundry completed, preparing dinners and boxed lunches and baking those cupcakes for yet another fundraiser...

So, as a way to say thank you to all moms out there and that I understand what you do, I want to get you in the story.  Let me capture you with your children...you can even put your husband or significant other in if you want, but hey they are already a big part of the captured story.

Mother's Day is next month on May 8th.  Any mom who would like to try me out and book a session with her child/children now thru the end of May, I will take 50% off my portfolio session rate (a $125 savings).  It's my best deal, but being a mom is a bigger deal.

Happy Mother's Day from one mom to another!

xo,

Lisa

P.S. Here's me on vacation last year with my family in The Bahamas...

Around The Town Images...Guys & Dolls Dance 2016

This was the fifth year my daughter attended the Lincoln Akerman Guys & Dolls Dance, but it was my first time to see what actually happens on this special evening.  Wow!  To all the moms, let me tell you why your daughter looks forward to this night...

The night begins at the Ashworth ballroom in Hampton Beach.  These girls all look gorgeous and I'm sure they feel it as their dads beam with pride.  They get to enjoy a sit down dinner with the main guy in their life and then it's all about hitting the dance floor for the night with friends.  And I mean...ALL NIGHT!  The room quickly warms from the energy radiating from the dance floor.  The speakers blare with pop music from today and a few rock-n-roll classics from the 80's for the dads.  I wanted to drop my camera and cut a rug with these girls...they were having an absolute blast!  It was nice to see all the smiling faces and hear the laughter thru out the night.

I did not plan to stay as long as I did, but the girls loved being around the camera and I was having such a blast capturing their happiness.

If you see any moments below that you are interested in, please email me and I will send you a fully edited high resolution digital.  These photographs are part of my Photographer Around Town Images and are available to be purchased for $15 individually.

Thank you Guys and Dolls for letting me see what all us moms are missing out on!

Keep smiling and cutting a rug...

Addison & Lydia...

These two best friends got decked out to the nines with manicures, styled hair, tulle dresses, sparkly jewels and Cinderella heels to attend their first Guys & Gals Dance.

I don't think their dads could have been more delighted and honored to accompany these two real life princesses!

You girls looked so beautiful and I loved your silliness!

Thank you for asking me to capture this special evening for you.

Keep smiling and wearing amazing shoes!

xo, Lisa
